Tashara M. Leak Receives Prestigious 2025 Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers

The Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) is the highest honor awarded by the U.S. federal government to outstanding early-career scientists and engineers. It recognizes individuals in the early stages of their independent research careers who show exceptional promise for leadership in the scientific community. The award was established during the Clinton administration and is coordinated by the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, with participation from various federal agencies.

The PECASE award acknowledges achievements in scientific research, technology advancement, STEM education, and community service. It particularly highlights those who demonstrate leadership through public education, outreach, and contributions to their fields that have the potential for significant societal impact.

For Tashara M. Leak, the award recognizes her innovative research in designing culturally relevant interventions to improve diet, health, and well-being, particularly for adolescents in urban communities. As an associate professor of nutritional sciences, her work informs public health programming and policy, and she is also the co-director of the Action Research Collaborative at Cornell University. Tashara’s studies, such as the Advanced Cooking Education program and Black Girls for Wellness, exemplify her commitment to creating impactful, community-based health initiatives.
